Inventors of the Sweatshirt

In 1930, Benjamin Russell invented the sweatshirt at the urging of his son Benny’s disappointment with the wool football garments of the time. What followed necessity has become arguably the most versatile and fashionable piece of clothing ever created. The sweatshirt no doubt transcends its initial intention and what remains is something so iconic we had to let the world know that Russell Athletic are the inventors of this timeless cotton masterpiece. So when Russell wanted to shift their focus from the team uniform business to direct-to-consumer apparel, we sank our teeth so hard into their company heritage they could probably hear us frothing at the mouth with the mute button on.

The Inventors video was directed by Andrew White for RW2 in KCMO with editorial by Nick Stout and color by Taylre Jones.
